Two dead, one injured in reported murder-suicide incident at a residence in Panama City

The Panama City Police Department received multiple phone calls reporting shots fired at a residence in SweetBay shortly before midnight on Friday.

Upon arrival, officers said they made contact with 67-year-old Newell Mock of Gulf County on the front porch of the residence armed with a handgun. As officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, Mock tragically took his own life, authorities said.

After securing the scene, officers entered the home and discovered two victims. Authorities confirmed one was a deceased male and the other was a female who sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers said they rendered life-saving aid to the female. She was transported to a local hospital and is currently receiving medical care.

According to a news release, two children ages five and seven were also found inside the residence. Both children were asleep during the incident and were unharmed, authorities said.

The investigation determined that Mock was the sole shooter in this incident. There is no ongoing threat to the community.

The Panama City Police Department is continuing its investigation and working to support the affected family members during this difficult time.

Witnesses are urged to call the Panama City Police Department at 850-872-3100 or Crime Stoppers at 850-785-TIPS to report their tips anonymously.
