The Mathews Bridge was closed for about four hours after a DUI-related crash with serious injuries, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
Police said a JSO officer was blocking a lane on the bridge with his marked patrol vehicle with emergency lights activated, police said.
A B, 30, was arrested on seven misdemeanor DUI charges, and careless driving and failure to move over violations.
The arrest report said a Good Samaritan stopped to help a man with a flat tire on the bridge and an officer pulled over a short time later. The officer’s vehicle was struck by B’s Ford Ranger and the patrol vehicle was thrust forward into the car with the flat tire, whose driver was taken to the hospital with a leg injury, the report said.
The report said the officer entered the Ford Ranger, stopped it and placed it in park. A passenger from the Ford Ranger was taken to the hospital. Officers said B appeared to have “bloodshot shot watery eyes” and “kept walking around the bridge and appeared confused.”
The report said he participated in field sobriety exercises and was then arrested on DUI charges.
The officer received an “abrasion” from the crash, according to the agency.
The bridge was blocked from approximately 2:30-7:30 a.m. Thursday.
