UPDATE: Fire, hazmat units put out nitro chemical fire near Escambia County facility

A nitro chemical fire broke out near a facility in Escambia County on Thursday afternoon.

A 20×20 shed behind the the Pall Corporation on Ely Road caught fire. In the shed is nitrocellulose — a highly flammable chemical.

Pall Corporation’s website describes itself as providing filtration, separation and purification products designed to protect against contamination. It services the industrial, food and beverage, marine and oil and gas industries.

The facility sits in a large industrial area, but there are homes just a few blocks away.

Escambia County Fire Rescue has put out the fire that was contained to the shed. They received a call about the incident around 3:40 p.m.

Hazmat units were out on scene assisting as well.

The entire building was evacuated. No injuries were reported.
