A Vero Beach man died after his pickup truck struck what highway officials said was a roll-off garbage truck Monday afternoon.
The crash occurred on County Road 510, or 90th Avenue, just outside southwest Sebastian city limits at 2:20 p.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The 77-year-old driver of the white 2002 Ford Ranger died at the scene of the crash, which was the road just east of the entrance to Sebastian River High School. FHP did not identify him.
The Port St. Lucie man, 38, operating the blue 2005 Mack Granite CV700 garbage truck sustained minor injuries, highway officials said in a news release.
A roll-off garbage truck transports open-topped waste containers, such as Dumpsters, to the local landfill or recycling center.
According to details of the crash provided by the agency, the northbound Ford Ranger went over the center line of the highway and with its front left side struck the left side of the southbound Mack truck.
The crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
