A reckless teenage driver caused a rollover crash on the Howard Frankland Bridge, sending a 74-year-old woman to the hospital, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Around 5:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Rolando Joaquin Garza, a 19-year-old Spring Hill man, was driving recklessly at high speed, weaving between cars on eastbound I-275 along the Howard Frankland Bridge, troopers said.
Near milepost 34, Garza tried to pass a Lexus RX350, driven by a 74-year-old Sarasota woman.
Due to the construction zone, a concrete barrier along the outside shoulder shifted to the edge of the road, leaving no space for Garza to pass the woman.
FHP said the teen was forced back into the travel lanes where he struck the Lexus, causing the woman’s vehicle to rotate, hit a guardrail, and overturned off the roadway. Both drivers each collided with an unoccupied vehicle, which were both parked in the construction zone.
Officials said Garza and the woman were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
FHP Troopers charged Garza with reckless driving.
