A 25-year-old woman has died after getting hit by a car while trying to help a dog on Dale Mabry Highway, the Florida Highway Patrol announced.

On Thursday around 10:25 p.m., a 25-year-old woman was leaving her birthday dinner and stopped her Kia Optima and exited to render aid to a dog.

As the woman approached the dog, a 69-year-old Tampa man driving a Toyota RAV4 struck both the dog and the woman, FHP said.

Both the woman and the dog suffered fatal injuries at the scene.
