Wrong-way driver with kids in vehicle arrested for DUI in Arcadia

A man was arrested on the Fourth of July for DUI and several other charges after Arcadia police said he was driving the wrong way down the street with two young children inside his vehicle.

According to APD, an officer saw an SUV pass police headquarters while driving southbound on a northbound lane of N. Brevard Avenue.

The officer pulled over the vehicle at the intersection of N. Brevard Avenue and Gibson Street. The driver, later identified as Nicholas Kahl, 34, stared blankly at the officer when asked if he knew he was driving the wrong way.

When police asked for Kahl’s driver’s license, he reportedly handed the officer a receipt for tires he had bought.

The arrest report states that police could smell a heavy odor of alcohol on Kahl’s breath. Two young children were in the back of the vehicle, and officers noticed a “Rainbow Runtz” marijuana vape in the passenger seat. A marijuana cigarette was later located in the center cup holder.

After being detained, Kahl refused to do field sobriety tests or give police his information.

Kahl was arrested, and a license number for Kahl was found out of Indiana. Police say he had three prior DUI convictions. He was taken to the DeSoto County Jail.

Kahl faces the following charges:

  • DUI (4th or more offense)
  • Neglect of a child without great or bodily harm
  • Refusal to submit breath, urine, blood test
  • Possession of controlled substance without prescription
  • Resisting officer without violence (Refusal to identify)
  • Possession of marijuana
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia

APD said the children were picked up safely from the scene by their mother.
